How does Ortho-K work? Ortho-K is a unique type of rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. They are custom shaped so when worn during sleep the lens and tear layer of the eye together produce a gentle pressure on the cornea, changing its shape.
Each lens is customized to each individual’s prescription, eye shape and vision needs. When done successfully, the patient can enjoy clear vision during the day without aid, the effect lasting most of the day. For ultimate effect, the lenses should be worn every night during regular sleep. Many Ortho-K patients have noticed an immediate improvement in their vision after just one night. Treatments take a full 1-2 weeks to stabilize.
The process is completely safe and completely reversible. To reverse the process, simply stop wearing the lenses for 48-72 hours, and the effects will wear off and the cornea will slowly return to its previous shape. For many patients, Ortho-k is a safer, nonsurgical, nonpermanent alternative to Lasik. For children, it is a great way to significantly slow down nearsightedness development that other processes cannot achieve.
